Last Reel to Reel Tape Recorder by PHILIPS (& picture history 1951-83)
The first reel to reel tape recorders were introduced in 1950-51, between 1952-54 standardisation forced manufacturer’s to make machines that were compatible concerning the sizes of reels and play speeds. The customer forced the other changes concerning quality of sound and aesthetic looks, by buying tape recorders that were good looking and sounded clear and sharp. People in the music industry became more demanding after pre-recorded tape reels were introduced in 1954. Tone controls, more tracks, stereo sound and balance controls were added to domestic machines. While machines for the recording industry were improved with more channels to help record more instruments and more people, and so allow better mixing. By the 1960s 16 channel became the basic standard. With the introduction of the ‘Cassette’ Tape Recorder, the standard tape recorder was given a new name ‘reel to reel’ Tape Recorder. It could easily surpass the quality of the new kid on the block. In the 1970s amplifiers and speakers became separate entities from the tape recorder. The age of the Tape Dec was born. This allowed consumers to be the better judges of what system they wanted and what power (in watts) and abilities (eg 5 or 7 graphic equalizers) it should have. At PHILIPS, engineers and designers were working on a new project for sound recording — the Audio Disc, which uses a laser to read the information and which could record sound perfectly, without distortion. And play it back perfectly time …

Revox PR99 MkI Reel to Reel with RMGI LPR35 Open Reel Tape plays Phil Woods
Hands down the best consumer recording we’ve made to date. 1/2 track at 7.5 ips, only 15 ips would beat this, we think. This wipes the floor with digital, both 16/44 and 24/96. No contest. Shame you can only get a glimpse of what this actually sounds like in this video. The RMGI tape doesn’t really need noise reduction if you record hot (which you can) and don’t mind a tiny bit of hiss. We just like to obliterate hiss… because we can.
This was recorded from the LP: Phil Woods and his European Rhythm Machine. The reels are PurpleHeart Analog Audio customs. The RMGI tape does not come with these. 1960′s JVC Nivico 4TR-4 Console Stereo with Words and Music (1948)
This is the JVC Nivico 4TR-4 Console Stereo that I’m guessing was made in the 1960′s. It has a 4-track reel-to-reel deck, a turntable and AM/FM radio that uses a special adaptor for picking up stations broadcast in stereo which was a new-fangled concept at the time. I love the 1948 film “Words and Music” and so I chose one of the 78rpm records from the soundtrack to demo the console, “I Wish I Were In Love Again” sung by Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. If you haven’t seen this movie and get a chance to, please go see it or pick it up. It is not available on DVD but is still available on VHS tape if you can find it. Once in a really blue moon it is shown on some of the more obscure cable channels. Speaking of which, Mel Torme sings “Blue Moon” in this film. It’s also one of the rare opportunities to catch Perry Como in a film, not only singing, but acting too… he was such a dreamboat. I could not find any current legal info on this 78RPM record or this song so I hope I’m not violating any copyright but if I am, please let me know and I’ll yank this video. Sorry for some of the noisiness when I’m talking near the stereo, I was standing directly beneath a ceiling fan and didn’t realize the mic would pick up wind noise from it. This video is especially for my buddy 78RecordRepair and also for my long time buddy and fellow Mickey Rooney addict Shannon.
