AIWA TP-50R rim-drive portable reel-to-reel tape recorder, vintage.
A very nive reel-to-reel I got at an estate sale yesterday.
RARE Pentron “Dormiphone” playing its tape cartridge.
This thing I got at a flea market. It must be very rare indeed. It may be from the ’40s or early ’50s. Of course it’s vacuum tube. I replaced the drive belt and recapped the signal capacitors in the amp, thus greatly improving performance. I will later make a video showing the recording function and it in more detail. There, as I found on the Net, I found that there was another Dormiphone unit that used a record player. But this one is tape. I found that these machines were used in the past to play subliminal messages to people while sleeping, to help learn a language or remember something. I also heard that they were used in research in ESP and dream telepathy. The clock works on this and all those switch things around it are switches to turn the machine on and off at times in the night, just like those plug-in timers for turning lights on and off to keep away robbers. Although I have the original microphone to this, it is dead unfortunately.

Vintage reel to reel tape recorder, part 1
I got this of eBay a couple of days ago. It works well, and this video is so long I’ve had to split it up into 2 parts!
Vintage Concord F-20 portable reel-to-reel recorder.
This is the same model recorder used in Mission Impossible. It seems to be a famous classic, and is small and DC bias. It is rim-drive, and rewind is slow. It is still a neat model. ClydeSight on YouTube has the same model machine. This one I got from an estate sale for around .00. The video was made April 20. Just a little late at editing and finally getting it on the ‘Tube.
Transworld vintage reel to reel tape recorder, no model number
This machine has no model number, just a serial one. Other than a rewind-belt related problem, this machine works great, and uses tubes. I replaced the audio capacitors with greatly improved the amplifier’s strength and quality. This machine is AC bias, and from the early to mid 60s judging by styling and that it uses tubes.
Very nice Sony TC-900A portable quality 3″ reel-to-reel…
Very good condition (execpt for missing Sony logo), very good sound at 3 3/4 IPS (9.5 cm/s), capstan drive and AC bias. Has bag and manual.
RCA YJS 20E reel to reel portable 5 inch recorder
I think I have the model remembered right. This is a very high-quality recorder from the ’60s.
Wollensak T-1400 reel to reel tape recorder, tube/valve!!
A very nice US-made reel-to-reel tape recorder. Semi-portable: has a handle, and is not as big as a regular deck, but no batteries and has to run off AC. I found this today (7/8/09) at a thrift store for . I had to do some minor mechanical repairs such as oiling, and putting new foam in for the clutch mechanism for the take-up reel, since the original had crumbled to dust. No recapping had to be done except I may need to replace the motor-run cap sometime soon. This machine also has a PA feature.
An Unexpected Recording on a Penncrest rim-drive reel-to-reel tape recorder portable.
This is a rather humerous recording made on this recorder back in the day. I had to do lots of cleaning and lubrication to get this machine up and running, because battery corrosion had messed up some bearings and moving parts.
