Lara’s theme from “Doctor Zhivago” from the original MGM reel-to-reel soundrack album

Click here for Stereo: www.youtube.com Artist: MGM Studio Orchestra conducted by Maurice Jarre Title: Lara’s theme from “Doctor Zhivago” (by Maurice Jarre) Album: “‘Dr. Zhivago:’ The Original Soundtrack Album” Label: MGM Records Cat No: STC 4343 Release Year: 1965 Country: USA Format: 1/4″ quarter track 7½ IPS reel to reel tape You’ll notice this is on a different machine than my other reel-to-reel posts. I bought this older Sony deck for my second system and to also post videos on YouTube since it is much lighter than my other deck and easier to move to my computer. My Pioneer deck is far better but it’s a little hard to post reel videos as it weighs an absolute ton and I need the machine close to my computer so the recording is “direct line” (was much easier when I had my laptop!). This Sony deck isn’t bad but is not “high end” like my other is. It’s a portable model from the late 60s with a built in amp and the distortion level seems to be rather high. One feature I like about this Sony machine is that it has the ability to play the tape in reverse (as it is here in this video) and also has auto-reverse; strangely my other machine doesn’t. Compare this video to my other reel-to-reel posts and you’ll see what I mean sound wise. The problem could be with the tape as this is the first time I’ve ever played it and I also used a new movie making program for the first time here. I didn’t like the new program much but my normal one keeps freezing on me. Not that bad I suppose.

Vintage Pioneer RT-707 Reel To Reel tape deck, and a strange mystery tape

This is one of my upcoming restoration projects. There is also a mystery tape with it.

My Sony TC-230 Reel To Reel

I found this while I was cleaning my basement. It was made in the 1960′s. It probably doesn’t work as well as it used to, but I still think it’s cool. (Music recorded from AFTN, The American Forces Thailand’s Network!!!)

Cleaning and Demagnetizing the Reel to Reel Deck

By request, a video of my cleaning and demagnetizing the Allied Radio TD1099 reel to reel tape deck’s transport components and heads. I’ll report on what, if any, improvements there were to the sound.

Tape Deck Harp Amp

In this video I show a Conrad “Stereophonic” all-tube reel-to-reel tape recorder that I modified into a bitchin amp! From wht I could discover on the net, the unit is vintage 1950′s or early 60′s. I simply removed all the mechanical parts, motor, etc that had to do with the tap drive, re-wired the input jacks to connect to where the tape heads were originally wired, and presto! It was an amp! It’s got a built in 3×6 speaker. The rest of the setup you see in the vid is: flashlight mic with old cell phone ear bud element into danelctro equalizer pedal into passive splitter with one channel going to a 5 wat legedary pignose, and the other going into the conrad. The riffs I’m playing are my own compositions, and are works in progress. Please be kind!

Revox PR99 MkI Reel to Reel with RMGI LPR35 Open Reel Tape plays Phil Woods

Hands down the best consumer recording we’ve made to date. 1/2 track at 7.5 ips, only 15 ips would beat this, we think. This wipes the floor with digital, both 16/44 and 24/96. No contest. Shame you can only get a glimpse of what this actually sounds like in this video. The RMGI tape doesn’t really need noise reduction if you record hot (which you can) and don’t mind a tiny bit of hiss. We just like to obliterate hiss… because we can. ;-) This was recorded from the LP: Phil Woods and his European Rhythm Machine. The reels are PurpleHeart Analog Audio customs. The RMGI tape does not come with these.
