Reel-to-Real (HSC ENGLISH EXTENSION 2 FILM)

Nuclear Nightmares ( Super-8 short film )

a Neil Capolongo film. Wedding musician, Neil, somehow works out his frustration over where his musical career and his marriage to Mary have ended up by obsessing on movies having to do with impending nuclear holocaust. His dreams are about his career, his marriage and his obsessive nucleomituphobia. Made in 1990, “Nuclear Nightmares” ( AKA “Dead Beat” ) was shot on Super-8 Kodachrome 40 sound reversal film. The camera used was a Nizo 6080. Seen here is a 10 minute segment of this originally 45 minute film, taken from a VHS dub ( film to Beta SP to VHS ) with some tightening on iMovie. The project was originally double-system edited on film. Camera original was cut using a PGP 6 plate Super-8 flatbed editor-incorporating the “Super-8 Sound” sync sound system: Mag IV fullcoat recorder and Elmo GS1200 projector. The location sound for all the interior scenes ( except one ) was recorded with the fullcoat recorder. The location sound for all the exterior scenes ( and the interior scene of Neil searching around the house for Mary ) was recorded on the film sound stripe; and then transferred to fullcoat for editing. Dialog, effects, and music tracks were then transferred to a multi-track cassette recorder for the mix. The final edited sound was then resolved back to a master fullcoat which was then recorded back onto the film’s magnetic track. The film’s magnetic track was used, at first, during the Rank Cintel telecine; but the sound on the Beta-SP dub was later re-recorded

“The Third Man Theme”

Release dates, September 2, 1949 UK 2 January 1950 USA The distinctive musical score was composed and played on the zither by Anton Karas. A single, “The Third Man Theme”, released in 1950 (Decca in UK, London Records in USA) became a best-seller, and later an LP was released. Before the production came to Vienna, Karas was an unknown wine bar performer. Reed and Howard fell in love with Karas’ zither after hearing him play inside a café. Karas agreed to record some of his own compositions on a reel-to-reel tape machine that Reed set up in the bedroom of his hotel; one of these was later to become the Harry Lime Theme and become a popular hit. The exposure made Karas an international star after the movie was released. Film critic Roger Ebert wrote, “Has there ever been a film where the music more perfectly suited the action than in Carol Reed’s ‘The Third Man’?” And I would say that never an introduction to the sadness reality was presented so well. _________________________________________ While musics plays, various documentary-style shots of post-war, divided, fragmented and occupied Vienna (a ‘frontier’ city dividing East and West – and governed by four Allied forces) are surveyed, an anonymous voice-over delivers a first-person prologue. Director Carol Reed in the original UK version. Joseph Cotten delivers prologue in US version. – (Lines only found in the UK version) – [CAPITAL LETTER only in the US version.] I never knew the old Vienna before the war, with its
