Hobo Goth Music ~3 string Reel to Reel ~ Just a couple analog tubes a whislin’ Dixie
Hobo Goth Music, Interesting eye opening life thing happened today. I was at my wife’s sisters house and her husband asked me “what kind of music I liked?” I thought for a brief second and out popped “Hobo Goth music” he looked at me strangely and said ‘yeah that’s cool” as if he had heard of it…so we went on about our visit….but it was stuck in brain gears and as soon as I got home I Googled the word “Hobo Goth” …I got nothing but random hits and mix matched entries, it doesn’t exist I am sure it’s somewhere out there???….but I will define it here for the next person who Googles it. Hobo Goth is a mix between Marlin Manson and Dust bowl era Woodie Guthrie tunes with a dash of Hell-fire bottleneck, it can only be played on 3 string guitars ran through cheap un-grounded 80′s soild state pawn shop reverb-less Gorilla amps…yeah you know those harsh 15 watters! Here’s a tune that will describe it were words can’t…… till we met again on the Darkside!

Fred Figglehorn’s DANCING SQUIRREL-DOGS (Call it a Day) – Original, Recorded 1970
This is the 1st of the ‘TK’ tapes which I recorded, back in 1970, on a Grundig TK18 valve-powered reel-to-reel tape-recorder. It was requested by Bill Redhead, who played the harmonica on it and hasn’t heard it since the night it was recorded – just the odd 38 years ago. Happy to oblige. We were 17 or 18 at the time & the Friday/Saturday night plan was to pile into my bedroom & play some music! Sometimes we had two guitars and a snare drum on the go. My poor parents and neighbours. On this track I play a rather ‘plankular’ EKO jumbo-acoustic six-string , Bill plays a Hohner chromatic harmonica. This is the first of the ‘TK’ tapes which were recorded on a Grundig TK18 reel-to-reel which still works perfectly. The chimes from the church clock tell me that it was just after 10 in the evening. Summer or winter . .I’ve no idea. And the sub-title? Well, that came about when my long-suffering father came in, around midnight, and said, “I think you’d better call it a day, lads.” – so we did! Guitar part composed & performed by Stuart Fretwell. Harmonica part composed & performed by Bill Redhead. Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee : If You Lose Your Money ( Reel To Reel Tape, Date Unknown )
A few years ago, I bought a box of old reel-to-reel tapes at a thrift store for five dollars. None of the tapes were labeled. One of them turned out to be Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. This is one of the songs they did .
Teac X-1000R Reel To Reel Rocking
My Teac X-1000R reel to reel is in the spotlight today as I play one of my tapes. Shown is the leadoff song (a great one I think) a good blues-rocker. Also shown are a few closeups of the reels spinning as well as looking over the deck itself. Tape used is Maxell XLI 35-180B. The supply reel is the unmarked side of a standard “Scotch” brand.
