I bought this older Sony deck for my second system and to also post videos on YouTube since it is much lighter than my other deck and easier to move to my computer. My Pioneer deck is far better but it’s a little hard to post reel videos as it weighs an absolute ton and I need the machine close to my computer so the recording is “direct line” (was much easier when I had my laptop!). This Sony deck isn’t bad but is not “high end” like my other is. It’s a portable model from the late 60s with a built in amp and the distortion level seems to be rather high. One feature I like about this Sony machine is that it has the ability to play the tape in reverse (as it is here in this video) and also has auto-reverse; strangely my other machine doesn’t. Compare this video to my other reel-to-reel posts and you’ll see what I mean sound wise. The problem could be with the tape as this is the first time I’ve ever played it and I also used a new movie making program for the first time here. I didn’t like the new program much but my normal one keeps freezing on me. Not that bad I suppose.

This is a quick demonstration of my 8 track Fostex Model 80 that recently sold on eBay. It’s a great little machine and a real shame to see it go. This is a rare model, ¼ inch tape with 8 tracks that will blow all your digital gear out of the water. A lot of these machines have buttons that do not work/dead lights, however this one they are all in working order. This video shows the machine working, all the lights and buttons etc. It also shows the functions of the machine including 2 memory points, looping, track solo/arming, monitor as well as play, stop fast-forward, rewind etc. I purchased this recorder a few years ago whilst studying on my music technology degree from a reel-to-reel collector. I have since taken excellent care of the machine and used it for recording an acoustic duo I used to play in. Im gutted Im selling this but Im having to downsize all my gear and I cant justify keeping it when I hardly record anymore. When I purchased the machine, the collector said the machine was actually used by the BBC for overdubbing programmes. I believe on the latter part of the tape (included) there are a few of the original recordings along with test tones. One full tape and one spool (blank) reel will be included. He believed that this is a rare model, and the 8 track ¼ tape Fostex machines are among some of the best you can buy. The machine sounds and looks great. John Wall Hoopmixtape Volume 1: Wall’s Senior Campaign at Word of God.

Czech reel to reel player/recorder, stereo, 2 heads, single speed (9 cm/s), one internal speaker for right channel, built-in amp. This was not intended as hi-fi machine but the sound is perfect. Years (approximately): 1980/82

This is the JVC Nivico 4TR-4 Console Stereo that I’m guessing was made in the 1960′s. It has a 4-track reel-to-reel deck, a turntable and AM/FM radio that uses a special adaptor for picking up stations broadcast in stereo which was a new-fangled concept at the time. I love the 1948 film “Words and Music” and so I chose one of the 78rpm records from the soundtrack to demo the console, “I Wish I Were In Love Again” sung by Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. If you haven’t seen this movie and get a chance to, please go see it or pick it up. It is not available on DVD but is still available on VHS tape if you can find it. Once in a really blue moon it is shown on some of the more obscure cable channels. Speaking of which, Mel Torme sings “Blue Moon” in this film. It’s also one of the rare opportunities to catch Perry Como in a film, not only singing, but acting too… he was such a dreamboat. I could not find any current legal info on this 78RPM record or this song so I hope I’m not violating any copyright but if I am, please let me know and I’ll yank this video. Sorry for some of the noisiness when I’m talking near the stereo, I was standing directly beneath a ceiling fan and didn’t realize the mic would pick up wind noise from it.
