How to align a tape machine for recording (Bias setup included)

Part 2 in our “How to” series about recording with tape. Before you do the record alignment in this video, make sure to do a repro alignment using your MRL (see the repro alignment video). This video is kind of long, but I decided to leave in a lot of extra footage to provide as much info and guidance as possible. Things you’ll need to complete this exercise are an MRL, a tone generator (we like the neutrik minirator for it’s portability and ease of use), and the overbias amount recommended by your the tape manufacturer. In this video, we used RMG 486 which required an overbias amount of +4 at 15 ips for our gap width (consult your manual or the internet for the gap width for you machine) This process may seem complicated at first, but with a little practice you’ll get the hang of it! Feel free to leave comments or shoot me an email if you have any question / comments or suggestions! Long live analog recording. www.ohmrecordingfacility.com oliphantscott@gmail.com

Rare Frank Sinatra Acapella

I have in my possession what I believe to be an original and unreleased reel-to-reel recording of what sounds like Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. I got the recording in a box of old recording equipment and tapes that were sold on auction from a storage facility in Hollywood two years ago. The reel-to-reel tape is titled “A7May66Reprise”, and no other information came with it. I have digitized a sample of the recording and uploaded it for you to listen to. I think there may be other recordings on the tape but due to my time limitations, I haven’t checked. www.sendspace.com I am asking 500 (obo) for this obviously rare reel recording: losangeles.craigslist.org If you would like to purchase this tape, please write me at onemanstrash01@gmail.com

Old 1963 Radio Recording I found

If you want to know what 60′s radio was like, play this. I was going through my Reel to Reel tapes, and I found this. I’m not quite sure if I got the year right, but I think that’s what I heard on the other side of the tape. I’ve had to cut the music short to avoid copyright issues and get the video short enough for YouTube. The quality isn’t too good, there’s drop-outs and distortion in places. I don’t know who recorded it, or what machine they used, but I’m sure it was recorded in the US, so how it got here I don’t know. Most of my reel to reel tapes I got from the web, used, so maybe that explains it.

1948 AEG Magnetophon K8 tape recorder

Demo of my AEG K8 Magnetophon playing Flat Foot Sam by Elmon Mickle (a very rare Elko blues 45rpm by the way). This rare machine is in great working order and uses German Telefunken vacuum tubes (EF12, EF14 etc.). It runs at 76cm/s (30ips) and is full track mono. I’m looking for old AEG Magnetophon machines, if you have one please let me know.

Vintage Roberts 1630 Reel to Reel Tape Recorder demonstration

For those of you who miss the sound of those old tape recorders…Here we have a Roberts 1630 reel to reel recorder. This is the oldest tape recorder in the collection. This is a pure analog recorder, using vaccum tubes. For this reason it is always best practice to let these units “warm up” before using. I believe these units were manufactured around the early to mid 60s. The song you hear is realtime playback from the deck, and the sound is purely authentic to this machine and not an overdub. The sound was taken from the line outputs. This is a treat for anyone who loves the unique sound of these old machines and the imperfect perfection of analog tape :-D . The tape used in the recording is BASF LGR – 50 – Broadcast grade. Enjoy
